Acer palmatum ‘Rock Star’ was discovered as a chance seedling from Acer palmatum ‘Ornatum’ by Frank Brannon in Atlanta, GA and has been cultivated here at Maple Ridge Nursery. ‘Rock Star’ emerges with stunningly bright red leaves in early spring which darken to a dark maroon color later in spring. The leaves fade to a green in summer before turning to a vibrant array of reds, yellows, and oranges in the fall. ‘Rock Star’ is a strong grower here in the south, but should still be shielded from the hot afternoon sun.
