Receiving the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit this old maple from Hillier and Son Nursery in England still deserves a spot in the garden. 'Nigrum is decidedly upright and forms a stately small tree with time. In early spring the leaves come out bright showy purple with green petioles. In late spring and early summer the leaves darken to the almost black color that gives this cultivar its name. Nigrum is Latin for black. As summer carries on the leaves first turn back more red then begin to get a green cast before turning mostly olive with a burgundy cast in hotter climates. The fall color is bright red and fantastic.
