April is a wonderful time for maples and if you have not seen 'Kasagi yama' in early spring you have missed a wonderful treat. Dark veins on pink or purple leaves in early spring and as the temperatures warm in the leaves turn more bronze or orange and the veins get lighter also. By summer in hot climates the leaves are mostly green but you can still see the nice contrast of the veins. In fall strong orange and red colors are complimented by the contrasting veins. 'Kasagi yama' does require protection from hot sun but if it can be spotted to receive good morning or late evening sun you will be rewarded with much better colors. 'Kasagi yama' means hanging over the mountain.
