This great little Japanese cedar has very coarse tight juvenile foliage that holds it's color well through winter. The growth habit is irregularly pyramidal. Occasionally 'Tansu' will send out extremely fast growing new growth shoots that are very different than the rest of the plant. I have seen these shouts grow 3 feet in one season. Some people call these sports others call them reversions. I am not sure; I believe that it is a type of mature foliage that occurs naturally on this plant. Either way, they are not as attractive as the rest of the plant and should be removed as soon as they are recognized.
