Acer palmatum ‘Twombly’s Red Sentinel’

This is a great introduction discovered as a witches broom on a 'Bloodgood' by Ken Twombly of Twombly Nursery, Monroe Connecticut. Much more vigorous than most witches brooms, 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' quickly develops the upright columnar habit for which it has become famous but will widen some with age.  New leaves appear crimson red then quickly darken to burgundy but as this plant almost always seems to be growing it has a two toned effect most of the year. 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' holds it's color all year in many climates and well into the year even in hot climates, tolerating full sun as far south as Atlanta Georgia.  Fall color is a spectacular red and the dark red stems of the last new growth even add interest to the winter landscape.
