This tree is very hard to categorize because it is technically a matsumurae type but the leaves make it appear to be a lace leaf with wide lobes. The growth habit is also very much like a lace leaf. The overall size would put it in the upper end of the dwarf group as its ten year height is generally less than 6 feet. No matter where you put it this is a cool plant. With feathery leaves that emerge green with red edges and brilliant yellow or orange fall color 'Shigure bato' deserves a spot in any garden.
