This old cultivar, dating back to 18th century Japan, is known for the sharply pointed saw toothed lobes of  its relatively small leaves. Red petioles add to the appearance. The limbs of this small round tree tend to arrange themselves in such a way to give the entire plant a very organized layered look that is very attractive. Fall color varies from yellow to red to orange but is always beautiful. One translation of sazanami is ruffles.
