Discovered in 1993 this wonderfully funky maple with the Japanese name that means "village of 10,000 leaves" is very similar to 'Beni shien'. In early spring the irregularly shaped leaves emerge cream and purple. Leaves become more purple and green with cream before the purple starts to fade in summer. While fairly sun tolerant this cultivar prefers some shade in hotter climates. In more sun the red colors become more prominent while in more shade the variegation becomes much more subtle. Fall color is red to orange and very pleasing.
